Governor requests federal disaster declaration for Kentucky after Friday’s tornadoes

Gov. Steve Beshear said in a news conference live-streamed from Frankfort Sunday that he is asked President Barack Obama for a federal disaster declaration for Kentucky.

The death toll from tornadoes that swept through the state Friday was at 21 as of Sunday around 4 p.m.

Beshear said search and rescue operations had been completed, but officials with the Kentucky State Police in Morehead said searches were still going on in West Liberty, Ky.

West Liberty, a town 80 miles east of Lexington in Morgan County, was nearly destroyed by a tornado Friday.

Other hard hit areas were Salyersville in Magoffin County and East Bernstadt in Laurel County.

East Bernstadt is a town of fewer than 800 people located five miles north of London, Ky.

Five people had been reported dead in East Bernstadt as of Sunday.
