Charles Matthews’ recruiting profile on Rivals
Kentucky head coach John Calipari received his first commitment for his 2015 recruiting class Wednesday, when five-star shooting guard Charles Matthews announced his pledge to the Wildcats. The Chicago native is a high school junior this year, and is still early in the recruiting process, but said he has known for months that he wanted to attend Kentucky.
Matthews’ commitment came after a recent in-home visit from Calipari himself on Monday. Rumors had swirled that a pledge was forthcoming, and Matthews made it official at a ceremony Thursday.
Among the major recruiting services, Matthews is ranked between 11th and 15th in the country within his class. Questions surfaced over whether Matthews would re-classify to the Class of 2014, but he dispelled those rumors, saying he wanted to finish out his last year and a half of high school.
“Matthews is a long and lean athletic wing that can get to the rim and finish on the break,” according to ESPN’s recruiting profile of the 6-5, 175-pound guard. “In the halfcourt he is an excellent slasher from especially along the baseline where he finishes with great touch and body control.”
