Rachel O’Farrell, a Make-A-Wish referral source and a social worker for UK Healthcare, was named the 2013 Medical Professional of the Year by Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. She is the first professional from Kentucky to ever win the award.
The Make-A-Wish foundation is one that helps children dealing with life-threatening medical problems. Kids who participate in the program have a “wish” that the foundation helps to fulfill – for example, traveling to New York or swimming with dolphins, which are two that O’Farrell helped orchestrate.
O’Farrell has assisted approximately 30 patients at UK’s pediatric hematology/oncology clinic to participate in their own Make-A-Wish experience.
A surprise reception was held at the Kentucky Clinic by Make-A-Wish, where organizers presented O’Farrell with her award.
“I was just doing what anyone in my position would do,” O’Farrell said in a UK news release. “I take a lot of meaning from the work I do. I am constantly inspired by the resilience of these families and these kids. The way they make meaning out of their experience is rejuvenating.”
