International Education Week Countdown: What’s Coming Up

International Education Week at the University of Kentucky kicks off one week from today, and the list of events are as exciting as always.

This annual celebration is hosted by the U.S. Department of State in combination with the U.S. Department of Education to promote global opportunities for Americans to venture outside of their comfort zones and into the international realm of education.

This year’s International Education Week will be November 17-21 and features different events throughout the week for UK students, faculty and staff to partake in some festive global opportunities.

Here’s a preview of what to expect during this year’s International Education Week.


  • The Vexilology (the study of maps) Contest
    • This weeklong contest revolves around identifying the Middle Eastern flags hanging in the William T. Young Library Atrium
    • Entries can be submitted either online or in person in the box at the Circulation Desk in the William T. Young Library
    • A winner will be selected on November 24 and will win a $15 Starbucks gift card

Monday, November 17

  • Bridge the Differences: A Dialogue
    • This talk will take place in the Niles Gallery inside the Fine Arts Library from 3:30-5 p.m.
    • Free food and drink will be provided
  • Dublin Study Abroad Info Session with Kathleen Urch
    • Details TBA

Tuesday, November 18

  • Education Abroad Open House
    • This free event will be on the third floor of Bradley Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where students can learn valuable information about education abroad opportunities
    • Education Abroad Peer Ambassadors will be present to answer specific questions about program offerings and to share their experiences with international education
    • Free food and drink will be provided

Wednesday, November 19

  • International Games Day
    • This free event is an afternoon full of internationally-themed card, board and video games and will be in room B-108C in the William T. Young Library from 1-4 p.m.
    • Free food and drink will be provided
  • Global Design with Phil Duncan
    • Phil Duncan is a global design officer for the Procter & Gamble Company and will be speaking in the UKAA Auditorium in the William T. Young Library from 3:30-5 p.m.

Thursday, November 20

  • International Education Week Keynote Speaker: Christie Vilsack
    • Vilsack, senior advisor for International Education at the U.S. Agency for International Development, will speak at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall
    • Her talk, “Let Girls Learn: Education in Developing Countries,” will focus on USAID’s education strategy
    • Admission is free and open to the public
