The first annual Lexington Music Awards took place on February 22nd at the Lyric Theatre in Lexington. The awards were created by music teacher David McLean and winners are selected by first having a public nomination forum and then narrowing down the candidates.
Kevin Holm-Hudson and Miles Osland of the UK School of Music both took home awards.
Kevin Holm-Hudson was awarded Best Keyboard. He has been an associate professor at the University of Kentucky since 2000 and teaches music theory. Miles Osland was awarded Best Brass/Winds as well as Best Jazz/World for his band DOJO. He created DOJO with former UK Music professor Vince DiMartino. Osland has been teaching saxophone at UK since 1989 and currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies.
Joe Conkwright, a DJ for WUKY won Best Radio DJ as well at the awards. Conkwright has been a DJ at WUKY since 1998. WUKY is Lexington’s NPR station that also airs music as well as original news shows. Conkwright has worked as a producer, host and announcer for the station and currently produces a show called “Joe’s Blues.”
