Wendell Berry Silas House Erik Reece
Kentucky Kernel staff are in the governor’s office suite in Frankfort covering noted Kentucky authors and activists, including Wendell Berry, Silas House and Erik Reece during an anticipated three-day sit-in.
These and 11 other activists held a meeting with Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear Friday morning about concern with the EPA’s Clean Water Act, but were displeased with the response. The group, which has adopted the name “Kentucky Rising,” decided to host the three-day long sit-in to protest mountaintop removal, saying that they would not leave the governor’s office until they were arrested or until the governor changed his position on a lawsuit that seeks the EPA’s enforcement of The Clean Water Act.
Gov. Steve Beshear said the activists were welcome to spend the weekend in his office.
The end of the sit-in will coincide with the “I Love Mountains” rally, scheduled to occur at 11 a.m. Monday morning on the steps of the Kentucky capital building.
